The WordByrd Network would define a QR Code as an opportunity for small businesses, growing organisations, and individuals/entrepreneurs alike to lessen their use of paper consumption.

History
Industrial Use
QR Codes (Quick Response Codes) were created in 1994 as a much needed update to barcode technology. They significantly improved functionality, storage, and accuracy in the car manufacturing industry. Fast forward almost 3 decades, and QR Codes are popping up everywhere now.
Present Day
More and more people are scanning QR Codes as well as adopting QR Codes into their marketing workflow. So it’s important to design your layouts effectively around their use, as well as taking the time to design one that is on point with your brand and attracts people to interact with it.

Machine Readable
From a design perspective a QR Code is simply ink on paper or pixels on a screen. Use a scanner or mobile camera to read the code and display what letters and numbers that the code is composed of. This could be many things, including domain names and contact info.
Other Versions
There are other versions of QR Codes that you have seen. On letters in the mail, inside the tongue of some of your shoes. They can hold more information within them without the QR Code getting bigger. Currently these can not be scanned with the native camera app on your phone, and at this time we only work with traditional QR Codes.

Serendipity
Although QR Codes were created as a solution to the limits of a standard barcode within the car manufacturing industry, they ended up becoming an eco-friendly option to engage mobile phone users to consume content without having to take paper products home with them. Thus limiting the need to print in bulk, and in some cases getting rid of paper use all together.
