Are QR Codes Safe?

When scanning a QR Code you’re usually not too worried about what will pop up on your phone. After all, you’re probably scanning a QR Code from a trusted person or business that has put one out on display for you to scan.

Ultimately, that’s what it comes down to. A QR Code is only as safe as the person or business that generated it.

Are QR Codes Safe?

Yes… as long as you trust the business establishment or the person that created the QR Code. Ultimately, the most popular use case of QR Codes for marketing is directing you to a website, or a file hosted on a website (like a .pdf).

Lookout!

When scanning a QR Code the first thing to lookout for is the domain name that is displayed when your camera scans one. They should never look over-complicated, and an option to preview the domain name should be available before moving forward.

Watch for...

Stickers! If it looks like a sticker has been placed over top of another QR Code then proceed with caution. Check the domain name first, and be sure to ask someone about the QR Code before proceeding. When scanning a WordByrd QR Code, people will see that we are managing it and will know that it's always a safe code to scan.

Domain Renewal

Your QR Code will never expire but your domain name will. If a business has gone under, or a person will not be renewing their domain name; another person or business can buy that domain and lead existing QR Codes to less than desirable places.

Responsibility

If you are handing out printed material with QR Codes on it, it is your responsibility to ensure that all codes never end up going to malicious links. Have a plan in place to inform customers how long your QR Code will be active for, and be sure to monitor all QR Codes over the duration of their use. If you're interested in having them managed for you, be sure to reach out to The WordByrd Network to learn more about our services.
